Doug Cuttell (dcuttell@purdue.edu) is available to discuss the proposal structure and project scope as the proposal is developed.
Funding opportunity description
The Executive Committee of the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research (PICR) will allocate funds to support cancer-relevant projects that are scored and close to the specific percentile or overall impact score that serves as a funding cutoff for the particular NIH institute (or equivalent). Funding is limited to R01 or R01-equivalent mechanisms which are multi-year grants. Projects that have no score and/or were not discussed are not eligible for this mechanism. Cancer-focused, NCI (or ACS, DoD, etc.) grants will be prioritized. For meritorious projects, funds will be awarded to contribute to the costs of acquiring new and important data in support of grant submission/revision. Funding for this opportunity is supported by generous donations by the Indiana Elks and other donor gifts and endowment funds to the PICR.
Submit your electronic application by 5 pm on the cycle due date. No exceptions. The electronic submission system will not allow applications beyond the deadline. Once there, you can enter your Purdue e-mail and password.
Qualifications/restrictions: Applicants must be members of the PICR. Only one application per institute member is allowed per academic year. No exceptions.
Cost share: This announcement does not require cost sharing.
Funds available and anticipated number of awards: The number of awards is contingent upon PICR endowments, gifts and other funds and the submission of meritorious applications.
Award budget: The proposal will be funded at a level appropriate for the proposed work but will not exceed $20,000.
Award project period: A project period of no more than six (6) months will be assigned to projects. Spending will be monitored. No-cost-extensions this will NOT be given for this mechanism, and any unspent funds will be returned to the PICR at the conclusion of the project. If the regulatory process approvals exceeds three (3) months, the award may be terminated and the applicant asked to re-apply.
Award restrictions: This award may not be used to pay for any equipment purchase..
Award requirements: Acceptance of an award will indicate your willingness to serve on the PICR’s Pilot Grants Review Committee for at least two consecutive cycles and to possibly represent the PICR at the annual Indiana Elks Convention or other philanthropic events. The awardee MUST acknowledge the PICR. Suggested publication acknowledgement:
“The authors gratefully acknowledge the <insert shared resource name> and support from the Purdue University Institute for Cancer Research, P30CA023168”
“The authors gratefully acknowledge the <insert shared resource name/funding mechanism> and support from the Purdue University Institute for Cancer Research, P30CA023168”
No cost extension (NCE): No cost extensions will NOT be given for this mechanism.
Regulatory: Please note the award is contingent upon obtaining all of the necessary regulatory approvals (e.g., IRB, IACUC, PACUC) or a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) pertaining to the work that has pending approvals.
Reporting: Responding to requests for progress updates at the end of project period will be requested. Triage of future applications may occur if reporting requests are ignored.
Proposal guidelines:
- Proposal Length: The proposal should be single-spaced and a maximum of two pages in length (Arial, 11pt) with no less than 0.5 inch margins.
- Required Proposal Structure:
- Cancer-relevance: Please describe clearly the cancer-relevance of your proposed project if the project was not submitted to a cancer agency.
- Approach, Timeline and Specific Outcomes: Describe the specific need to complete project data to support a competitive re-submission for the project. Please refer to the summary statement (which you will attach with the submission) details that support your project plan.

- Two-page proposal

Review Criteria:
- The feasibility of completing the project within 6 months and responsiveness of the plan to address the reviewer concerns.
- Cancer relevance
- Productivity from previous internal awards will be assessed and weighted appropriately.
- Projects will be evaluated for scientific impact, project feasibility, and likelihood to position the resubmission into the fundable range.
- Reviewers could consist of senior/program leaders. Writing for a broad cancer-focused review panel is encouraged.
