FACULTY SUPPORT

Faculty have access to a wide range of resources to advance cancer research, from grant-writing support and training opportunities to recognition programs and connections with national research leaders. The Purdue Institute for Cancer Research (PICR) highlights and supports these opportunities to help investigators strengthen their impact.

Get grant writing support

Faculty can access professional grant writing support through Purdue’s Office of Research. These services strengthen the clarity, competitiveness and impact of cancer-focused funding proposals.

PICR has implemented an institute-wide program to offer financial support for faculty members to receive pre-reviews of their grant proposals by outside expert(s), as well as to participate in intensive grant writing programs with full financial support from PICR. One option is the Grant Writers’ Workshop & Seminars for faculty who are already engaged with the Office of Research, to provide a free one-day workshop. After participating in the workshop, PICR provides financial support (approximately $4,400 per faculty member) for participation in the program.

Grantsmanship workshops offered by the Office of Research throughout the year help faculty strengthen their research proposals. These sessions are especially valuable for those new to the research process at Purdue.

PICR Early Career Research Achievement Award

PICR recognizes tenure-track assistant professors whose work extends beyond their dissertation and demonstrates significant impact in their field. Eligible recipients are PICR members who have been on Purdue’s faculty for at least two years. Honorees are selected based on clear scientific and scholarly contributions achieved while PICR members. The award includes a $1,000 monetary prize and a commemorative plaque, presented at the annual Recognition Awards Ceremony each spring.

Visit the NIH

The Purdue Institute for Cancer Research provides select faculty with up to $1,000 in funding to participate in a coordinated visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), generally covering all travel expenses. Participants receive preparation support from Purdue’s Coordinator of NIH Research Development, including help identifying relevant program officers and developing a concept summary for potential projects or grant applications. During the visit, faculty meet with their designated program officers when possible, attend an NIH council meeting, and gain valuable insight into funding priorities and review processes. This unique opportunity fosters relationships, strengthens future grant proposals, and encourages collaborations across Purdue and beyond.
