Seminar Series: Kevin Alicea Torres
Kevin Alicea Torres, assistant professor in the Cell & Molecular Biology department at University of Puerto Rico-Humacao, will be a speaker for the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research 2025-26 Seminar Series.
Title: From Bench to Community: Advancing Cancer Immunology and Science

Cancer immunoediting is shaped by both tumor-intrinsic programs and the immune microenvironment, including metabolically reprogrammed myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) that blunt anti-tumor T and NK cell responses. Our laboratory investigates how type I interferon signaling and metabolic pathways sculpt MDSC function and immune suppression, and explores plant-derived immunomodulators as tools to shift myeloid states toward anti-tumor activity. In parallel, we integrate community-engaged research to address cancer disparities in Puerto Rico, leveraging large-scale resources alongside local registries to contextualize behavioral, environmental, and genetic contributors to risk. I will summarize recent mechanistic findings, share early translational concepts, and outline a science-communication framework we use to translate complex immunology for students, clinicians, and community partners. Together, these strands aim to accelerate discovery while broadening public understanding and trust.
The event is hosted by Jorge Perez De Jesus.
