NIH Fellowship-Writing Workshop Series

The Office of Research, Purdue Institute for Cancer Research and Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars are launching an intensive NIH Fellowship-Writing Workshop Series for Purdue PhD students, MD/PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

The six-month series is designed for participants preparing an NIH fellowship or transition award application and will combine expert instruction, structured writing deadlines, individual advisement, peer and faculty review, and feedback on application drafts. Participants will work toward a complete application draft for the April 2027 NIH submission cycle or an applicable K99/R00 submission cycle.

Who should participate

Eligible students and postdocs in the ideal application windows who:

• Can commit to the 6-month schedule of lectures, draft-writing, and peer-draft review.
• Have an advisor/PI who can commit to reviewing drafts and providing feedback throughout the series.
• Are actively preparing, or seriously considering, an NIH F30, F31, F32, F99/K00, or K99/R00 application.

Participants should be at an appropriate career stage for their intended mechanism and have an advisor or PI who can commit to reviewing drafts and providing feedback throughout the series.

What to expect

The workshop will guide participants through the major components of an NIH application, including:

• Specific aims
• Research strategy
• Candidate and training sections
• Biosketches and supplemental documents
• Peer and faculty review
• Final application preparation

Expert speakers and NIH-experienced faculty will provide guidance throughout the series. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive feedback on a complete application draft before submission.

Faculty advisors and PIs will have access to workshop materials and may attend sessions.

Schedule and participation commitment

Lectures and advisement sessions will be held primarily on Mondays from 9-10:20 a.m. in Pierce Hall, Room 277. In-person participation is strongly encouraged. Session recordings and slides will also be available to participants.

In addition to developing their own application materials, participants and their faculty advisors will each review draft sections from another workshop participant. The peer-review commitment is expected to total no more than 4.5 hours across the full series.

Participant award

OGSPS and PICR will provide a $500 award to participants who submit an NIH application following the workshop series.

Registration deadline: Noon on Sept. 8, 2026

Applicants must complete the workshop registration form and submit a signed Faculty Sponsor Commitment Form from their advisor or PI.
